Tiv Youths Condemn Amnesty on Deadly Armed Fulani Herdsmen, Bandits, Terrorists

Tiv Youths, represented by the Tiv Youth Organisation (TYO) Abuja chapter, have strongly criticized recent calls for the Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to consider granting amnesty to bandits, terrorists, and armed herdsmen. The condemnation was made during the address of the newly inaugurated President of TYO, Chief Joseph Saater Undu, in Abuja over the weekend.

The calls for amnesty came from prominent figures such as former Zamfara State Governor Ahmad Yerima and Senator Diket Satso Plang, who suggested that engaging in dialogue with bandits could help address the security challenges in the North-West region of the country.

Undu, however, expressed his disapproval of these proposals and called on the government to take decisive action against identified security threats. He urged President Tinubu, through the National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to direct security chiefs to clamp down on these threats and neutralize them in order to restore peace and security for the citizens.

The TYO president emphasized the need to hold all arrested suspects accountable by charging them in court for their crimes against innocent Nigerians. Undu further advocated for the establishment of Special Courts dedicated to the speedy trials of suspects involved in acts of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

Undu also addressed the issue of rural-urban migration, attributing the widespread insecurity in the country, particularly in the North Central region, to armed herdsmen, bandits, and kidnappers. He stressed that this insecurity is a major factor contributing to Nigeria's food crisis and poses a threat to urban centers due to the influx of unskilled and unemployable young men who have been forced to leave their communities in search of safety.

Undu proposed that attacks on communities should be halted, making them safe for residents and farmers. He also suggested making subsistence farming more attractive and profitable as a means to discourage the rural-urban migration caused by insecurity.

In closing, Undu stated that with the necessary political will, the President could rely on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to eliminate all criminals, terrorists, and bandits within a month, without the need for the involvement of the Nigerian Military or non-state actors.

The Tiv Youth Organisation (TYO) was established in 1988 to coordinate the activities and well-being of Tiv youths around the world. Its headquarters are located in Gboko, Benue State
