BREAKING: Farouk Lawan Regains Freedom After Serving 5-Year Jail Term After Being Convicted for $300,000 bribe from Nigerian businessman, Femi Otedola
Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been released after serving a five-year prison sentence. Lawan was convicted for soliciting and accepting a $300,000 bribe from Nigerian businessman, Femi Otedola. His release from the Kuje Correctional facility in Abuja on Tuesday marks the end of a turbulent chapter in his political career.
In a statement following his release, Lawan expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the support of his family and friends. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial,” he said. He further stated that his health and well-being were intact, and he was eager to reunite with his loved ones.
Lawan’s legal troubles began in 2012 when, as chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating fuel subsidy fraud, he was caught in a sting operation accepting bribes from Otedola. The businessman alleged that Lawan demanded $3 million to remove his company, Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, from the list of firms implicated in the subsidy scandal.
After years of legal battles, Lawan was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison by the Court of Appeal in Abuja in February 2022. The Supreme Court later upheld his conviction in January 2024, dismissing his appeal as without merit.
Lawan’s conviction serves as a significant marker in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against corruption, especially within the political elite. The case attracted widespread attention due to its high-profile nature, underscoring the deep-seated issues of corruption within the Nigerian political system.
