Army Relocate Checkpoint After Attack By Gunmen, Cite Reasons


The Nigerian Army has reopened the Umuokpara-Onuimo Road to the public after several days of closure following an attack by unidentified gunmen that left three military personnel dead. This move comes as part of renewed efforts to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of road users in the affected area.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Enugu, Major General H.T. Dada, accompanied by the Brigade Commander of 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Brigadier General Olusola Diya, and other senior military officers, inspected the site of the incident. During the visit, it was resolved that the military checkpoint previously stationed in a densely populated area would be relocated to a more strategic location near the Onuimo River. This decision aims to provide a clearer vantage point for monitoring and enhance the military’s response capacity in case of future threats.

Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd.), Special Adviser to Abia State Governor Alex Otti on security matters, highlighted that the initial checkpoint location posed operational challenges due to its proximity to a built-up area. He acknowledged the support of the traditional ruler of Ezeleke autonomous community, Eze Ibeakanma, and other community leaders, who have been instrumental in facilitating the relocation of the checkpoint. Their collaboration underscores the shared commitment to addressing the inconvenience caused by the road closure and improving overall security in the region.

Ubah further noted that local communities have pledged their support by offering to clear the new checkpoint site and provide intelligence to assist the military in its operations. This development reflects the collective recognition that security is a shared responsibility, requiring active involvement from all stakeholders.

The Commanding Officer of the 145 Battalion, Umuahia, Major Martin Domkat, was also part of the high-ranking delegation that assessed the situation. The relocation of the checkpoint is expected to enhance security operations and foster a sense of safety for residents and travelers in the area.

The reopening of the Umuokpara-Onuimo Road signals a significant step towards restoring public confidence and ensuring that such tragic incidents are mitigated in the future.
