Governor Initiates Policy that Grants All First Class Indigenes Automatic State Employment

Governor has introduced an initiative to grant automatic employment to first-class graduates from both Nigerian and foreign universities into the state Civil and Public Service. This new policy aims to improve the quality of manpower in the state’s public sector and enhance service delivery across government institutions.

The announcement was made by the state’s Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, who described the initiative as part of the Graduate Development Programme. This program is designed to attract top-tier talent to the state’s civil service, with a focus on first-class graduates and those with high-grade degrees. According to Okungbowa, Governor Okpebholo’s goal is to motivate workers and create an environment where top graduates can make meaningful contributions to the development of the state.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized that this policy is not only aimed at attracting skilled professionals but also at retaining them within the state's workforce—a challenge that has been difficult in the past. The initiative is open to all first-class graduates of Edo origin, regardless of whether they studied within Nigeria or abroad, and is expected to bring fresh talent into the state’s civil service.

The program is initially targeting graduates from 2020 onwards, though Governor Okpebholo has hinted at the possibility of extending the initiative in the future. Those selected for the program will be rotated across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the state, as well as in the private sector, to help them gain broader experience and contribute to the development of the state.

This move is expected to strengthen the state’s public service by injecting highly skilled professionals into the system, improving efficiency, and ensuring better service delivery to the people of Edo State.
