IVA VALLEY MASSACRE MEMORIAL: "Gov Mbah will Transform Mining into a Catalyst For Development in Enugu State" - Engr Samuel Onyinye Okoro

During the colonial era, spanning from 1914 to 1960, mining activities in Enugu were marked by harsh treatment and exploitation of miners, with little regard for their well-being or the development of their communities. Despite the end of colonial rule, many mining communities have continued to feel the echoes of this inequity, grappling with inadequate infrastructure, limited opportunities, and environmental degradation.

The administration of His Excellency,  Barr. Peter Mbah, the Governor of Enugu State, recognizes these challenges and is determined to rewrite this narrative. The state government is committed to ensuring that mining no longer symbolizes exploitation but becomes a source of empowerment and development for local communities.

The state government will promote Inclusive Community Participation by ensuring that local communities are not mere spectators but active participants in decisions concerning mining activities in their areas.

Traditional rulers and PGs, and other stakeholders are being engaged in meaningful dialogue to align mining activities with the aspirations and needs of the people. This participatory approach fosters transparency and ensures that the voices of the communities are heard and respected.

Through mining activities the state Government is committed to leaving a legacy of development, not destruction. As such, the state government is actively working to provide critical infrastructure that will uplift the living standards of mining communities. Projects are being prioritized to ensure that the benefits of mining extend beyond the extraction of minerals and contribute to the overall development of these communities.

The Governor is equally committed to protecting the environment for present and future generations. Strict environmental regulations are being enforced to ensure that mining companies operate responsibly, with minimal ecological impact. Reclamation and rehabilitation of mined lands are integral to the state’s strategy, ensuring that the environment is restored and remains conducive for agriculture, habitation, and other uses.

In other to address historical inequalities, the government is ensuring that what is due to mining communities is delivered to them. Royalties, community development agreements, and other financial benefits from mining activities are being channeled to empower the local communities.

This is a call to all stakeholders, traditional leaders, and mining companies, to join hands with the government in building a brighter tommorow where mining brings hope, prosperity, and progress to every corner of Enugu State. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of mining is one of shared prosperity and sustainable growth.

As we reflect on the sacrifice of Okwudili Ojiyi, his 21 comrades who lost their lives, and the 51 others injured at the Iva Valley coal mine, let their courage inspire us to do things right this time.

                              OZOEMENA !!
