TRAGEDY: 70-year-old Woman Kidnapped, Murdered in Enugu by Two Lovers

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command's Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad have arrested two suspects for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping, murder, and burial of Mrs. Mary Nwatu, a 70-year-old woman, in a shallow grave. The suspects, identified as 33-year-old Ikechukwu Okoye and 39-year-old Juliet Ogbodo, both hail from Onuorie-Obuno in Akpugo Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The gruesome incident occurred in September 2024. According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigations revealed that Mrs. Nwatu was reported missing on September 15, 2024, after all efforts by her family to locate her proved futile. Subsequently, on October 5, 2024, the prime suspect, Ikechukwu Okoye, began contacting the victim’s children, demanding a ransom of six million Naira (N6,000,000.00).

DSP Ndukwe stated that Okoye confessed to abducting Mrs. Nwatu on September 14, 2024, around 8:00 a.m. when she visited his residence searching for his mother. He further admitted to killing her and burying her in a shallow grave inside an uncompleted building within the compound. Following his arrest, Okoye revealed that he had negotiated the ransom with the victim’s children from six million Naira (N6,000,000.00) down to three million Naira (N3,000,000.00). However, he managed to extort only twenty thousand Naira (N20,000.00) from them, claiming it was to allow the children to hear their mother’s voice over the phone before further payments could be made.

Juliet Ogbodo, Okoye’s intimate partner, also confessed to being aware of the crime but failed to report it to the authorities. Her complicity in the matter underscores her active involvement and concealment of the heinous act.

The remains of Mrs. Nwatu have been exhumed and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. DSP Ndukwe assured that the suspects, along with any other individuals implicated in the crime, would face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations. This case highlights the disturbing betrayal of trust within familial relationships and underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
