University Shut Down After Gunmen Kidnapped Four Female Students

The authorities of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, formerly Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue State, have shut down the institution for one week to address security challenges following the kidnapping of four female students.

The abduction occurred on Tuesday night when armed men whisked the students away to an unknown destination. Reports indicate that the students were attacked around 8:30 pm while heading to a lecture hall to read.

The incident sparked outrage among students, who demanded immediate action from the authorities to ensure the release of the victims.

In response, the university management issued a statement through the Registrar, Dr. John David, on Wednesday, expressing solidarity with the students and their families. The management also declared a one-week mid-semester break and directed all students to vacate the hostels by 4:00 pm on February 26, 2025.

The statement read:

"Sequel to the unfortunate incident that occurred on campus (Tuesday, February 25, 2025) at about 8:00 pm, where unknown armed men abducted three students between Zamfara Hostel and Ring Road in North Core, the University Management, after a series of consultative meetings with security agencies and stakeholders, condemns the incident in its entirety.

"Government and security agencies have been duly informed about the unfortunate incident. All staff, students, and the general public are enjoined to remain calm as security agencies are working tirelessly to secure the release of the abducted students.

"The Inaugural Lecture scheduled for today (February 26, 2025) has been postponed indefinitely. In solidarity with the students and parents of the abducted students, the University Management has granted a one-week mid-semester break to all students to adequately address the security challenges on campus.

"Consequently, all students are to vacate their hostels before 4:00 pm today, Wednesday, February 26, 2025."
