Three Enugu Commissioners, SPA Resign in Rare Wave of Voluntary Exits
In a rare and commendable wave of voluntary exits under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration, three high-caliber appointees, including Hon. Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke, have gracefully bowed out of office, stirring discussions across Enugu’s political landscape.
Hon. Ugwuoke, who served as Commissioner for Labour and Employment, became the third notable appointee to step aside, following the earlier resignation of Engr. Andreas Gebauer, the Austrian-born Special Assistant to the Governor on Water and Waste, and the recent exit of the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, herself the daughter of a former Enugu State Governor. It is worth recalling that Hon. Aka Eze Aka, the Commissioner for Information, resigned in 2023, leaving a vacancy that remains unfilled.
In a political environment where many lobby tirelessly for such positions, these voluntary resignations by individuals of vision, capacity, and means hint at deeper undercurrents. Whether these leaders are being prepared for bigger responsibilities or are choosing to refocus on their flourishing private ventures, their actions speak to the possibility of honour in public service—both in entrance and in exit.
Engr. Gebauer, in his farewell message to the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) team, highlighted the collective progress achieved during his two years of service, praising the agency under the leadership of Richard and expressing hope for continued improvements:
“Dear team, I want to inform you that I stepped down yesterday as SPA to the governor. I am really proud of what we have achieved together and I am proud that I had a chance to lead you for 2 years.
#ESWAMA is for sure the best agency in Enugu and also one of the leading in whole Nigeria. You have tremendously improved under the management of Richard, who has done a fantastic job and I hope he will stay with ESWAMA and become officially the new MD.
Please keep on pushing as there is always room for improvements. When I will be back in Enugu, I will invite you for a dinner to say thank you to all of you.”
These exits, rather than signaling instability, may reflect a new culture of purposeful, value-driven service within Enugu’s governance ecosystem under Governor Mbah, reminding citizens and leaders alike that the true essence of leadership lies in service, integrity, and the courage to know when to bow out gracefully.
