Chidi Ilogebe Hails Professor Daniel Nwachukwu’s Assumption of Office as Vice-Chancellor, Says it Signals a New Phase of Institutional Development at AE-FUNAI

Institutions of higher learning across the world are widely regarded as critical drivers of societal development. Beyond serving as centres for professional training, universities function as intellectual hubs where research, scholarship, and innovation shape perspectives on the past, inform present realities, and influence future progress. The effectiveness of these roles, however, depends significantly on visionary and purposeful leadership.

The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State (AE-FUNAI), formerly Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, is poised to embark on a new phase of institutional advancement following the assumption of office by Professor Daniel Nwachukwu as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University. His appointment is widely viewed as a strategic step toward strengthening the university’s commitment to academic excellence and institutional growth.

Professor Daniel Nwachukwu is a distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology whose academic career began in 1999. He rose through the academic ranks to attain professorship in 2016. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, he served in several key leadership positions at the University of Nigeria, including Head of the Department of Physiology, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. His extensive administrative experience and academic background position him to provide effective leadership at AE-FUNAI.

Established on 28 February 2011 alongside eight other federal universities by the Federal Government of Nigeria, AE-FUNAI was created to expand access to quality university education across the country. As a relatively young institution compared to long-established universities such as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), the University of Ibadan (UI), and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), AE-FUNAI continues to consolidate its identity within Nigeria’s higher education landscape while striving for global competitiveness.

Professor Nwachukwu was formally inaugurated on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, in a ceremony attended by members of the university community and distinguished guests. In his inaugural address, he expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the contributions of individuals and stakeholders who supported his emergence as Vice-Chancellor. Emphasizing the university’s motto, Excellence and Integrity, he reaffirmed his commitment to transparent governance, adherence to due process, and institutional accountability.

He also acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations and pledged to consolidate existing achievements while expanding ongoing development initiatives. Recognizing students as central stakeholders in university administration, he reiterated that the success of any university depends fundamentally on the wellbeing and active participation of its student body.

Among his immediate priorities are improvements to campus infrastructure and security, including enhanced lighting across the university environment, completion of perimeter fencing, and the deployment of technology-driven security systems. He further outlined plans for new academic and administrative buildings, improved staff welfare, strengthened public–private partnerships, scholarship opportunities for indigent students, and a comprehensive overhaul of the university’s ICT infrastructure.

Professor Nwachukwu emphasized that his administration would operate an open-door policy while maintaining measurable timelines for proposed initiatives. He called on staff, students, and stakeholders to collaborate actively with the administration and participate in periodic assessments of institutional progress.

The inauguration signals the beginning of a new administrative era at AE-FUNAI, marked by renewed aspirations for growth, accountability, and academic distinction.
