BREAKING: ICPC Releases El-Rufai After Weeks in Custody
The (ICPC) has released former Kaduna State governor, , after spending over a month in detention.
El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following his arrest shortly after he was released from the (EFCC), where he was earlier interrogated for 48 hours.
The anti-graft agency had arraigned him before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. The court subsequently adjourned his bail application to March 31.
However, his release reportedly came hours after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt, suggesting that the decision may have been granted on compassionate grounds.
An ally of the former governor confirmed the development but declined to give further details, while his son, Bashir El-Rufai, also confirmed the release in an emotional statement on social media, expressing gratitude for the support received during the period.
Family sources disclosed that the remains of the deceased matriarch are expected to arrive from Cairo on Saturday.
El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations levelled against him, as further developments are awaited.
