NELFUND, EFCC Seal Landmark MoU to Strengthen Education Financing and Accountability
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have strengthened their institutional partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving transparency, accountability and sustainable financing for tertiary education.
The agreement was reached during a high-level engagement between both institutions, with NELFUND Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, leading the Fund’s delegation.
The partnership opens a new channel for collaboration around funds recovered through EFCC activities, with both institutions exploring how such resources may support NELFUND’s mandate of expanding access to sustainable education financing, subject to applicable laws, regulations and established procedures.
The MoU also provides a framework for stronger cooperation in institutional controls, process optimisation and the identification of potential loopholes that could affect the effective management of resources.
For NELFUND, the development is significant as the Fund continues to implement its student financing mandate and work with government institutions to strengthen the systems supporting its programmes.
The NELFUND delegation included the Executive Director, Operations, Mr. Mustapha Iyal, alongside Dr. Zino Ugboma, Director, Human Resources; Hajiya Lami Suwaid, Director, Loan Allocation & Distribution; Ms. Oluwatosin Sanusi, Head, Investment & Fund Management; Mr. Tolutayo Olajolo, Head, Facility & Fleet Management; Mrs. Chekwube Okwara, Head, Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit; Mr. Akeem Lawal, Consultant on Anti-Corruption; Mrs. Tobechukwu Rapu-uneanya, Manager, Legal; and Mr. Daniel Adeniran, Assistant Manager, Strategic Communications.
Following the engagement, Sawyerr and Iyal also participated in a brief radio interview at the EFCC Radio Station, where they discussed the significance of the meeting, the newly signed MoU and the importance of inter-agency collaboration.
The partnership is expected to reinforce institutional safeguards, promote greater accountability and improve cooperation between both agencies as they explore areas of mutual interest.
NELFUND said the engagement reflects its commitment to strategic partnerships and stronger institutional systems as it continues working towards expanding access to education financing for Nigerian students.
