Tinubu: NELFUND Putting Education Within Reach as Student Loans Transform Access to Universities

 


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has highlighted the growing impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), saying the student-loan initiative is helping to put tertiary education within reach of more Nigerian youths as his administration’s reforms continue to take root.

In a statement shared on X, the President pointed to the absence of prolonged strikes in universities and the fact that Nigerian students are remaining in classrooms, alongside NELFUND’s student-loan intervention and affordable credit being provided to civil servants through CreditCorp.

Tinubu said his administration would not reverse the reforms undertaken over the past three years, arguing that the emerging improvements must now translate more quickly into tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians.

The President’s reference to NELFUND comes as the Fund continues to expand its nationwide reach, with more than 1.6 million applications recorded and over ₦322 billion reportedly disbursed in institutional fees and upkeep support.

Under the leadership of NELFUND Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Fund has continued to strengthen its digital application and verification systems while expanding student financing across participating tertiary institutions.

For millions of Nigerian students and their families, the significance of NELFUND goes beyond the figures. It represents a new pathway through which financial hardship can be prevented from becoming a permanent barrier to higher education.

Tinubu’s latest statement therefore reinforces the President’s broader argument that the ultimate measure of reform is not simply policy announcements or economic statistics, but how quickly those reforms begin to improve the daily lives and future prospects of Nigerians.

“We will not turn back,” the President declared, signalling his determination to sustain the reform trajectory while accelerating measures aimed at reducing the burden on vulnerable Nigerians through cheaper transportation, increased food production and grassroots relief programmes.
