Breaking News NANS Demands for Release of Nnamdi Kanu
The Enugu State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and Student Union Government (SUG) presidents from various higher institutions in Enugu State held a joint press conference to address the concerning issue of the Monday sit-at-home order and to call for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Comrade Prisca Okeke, Chairman of NANS Enugu State Chapter, expressed their stance and concerns regarding the impact of the ongoing sit-at-home protests in the region.
The continuous detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent figure in the Igbo nation and a leader in the Biafra separatist movement, has been a matter of immense concern for many Nigerians, particularly in the southeastern region. As students, they acknowledged their deep connection to their heritage but also highlighted the adverse consequences the sit-at-home order has on education and the future of the younger generation.
Comrade Prisca Okeke emphasized that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's love for the Igbo nation was evident in his actions and that he would not support any activity that adversely affected the region, including the compulsory Monday sit-at-home. The students expressed their solidarity with other well-meaning Nigerians in calling for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's release, in line with the decision of a competent court.
The sit-at-home protests, which require people to stay indoors every Monday, have significantly disrupted academic calendars and caused economic hardships for students and their families. The students pointed out that education is the foundation of every thriving society, and any venture that undermines it becomes a collective enemy.
One of the major concerns raised by the students was the mental toll the sit-at-home order had on young minds. The idea of having a weekday off from academic work was becoming dangerously fascinating to them, which may lead to an aversion to work and discipline in the future.
Furthermore, the economic implications were severe, with parents and guardians struggling to meet the rising costs of tuition fees due to the prevailing economic challenges. The students called for support from various sectors of society, including parents, teachers, government officials, traders, religious organizations, and artisans, to dissociate themselves from the sit-at-home activity to safeguard the future of education in the region.
The students also commended the efforts of the Enugu State government in addressing the issue and urged the people to cooperate with the government's efforts to end the sit-at-home protests.
In conclusion, the NANS Enugu State Chapter made a special appeal to all well-meaning Igbo individuals and groups to join forces in putting an end to the Monday sit-at-home order. They stressed that unity and collective efforts were essential to ensure the prosperity and progress of the Igbo nation, and that education must be prioritized for the sake of the younger generation's future
