Women Group Condemns Unlawful Imposition of Sit-at-Home Directives, Calls for Resumption of Economic Activities in the South East Region

In a bid to combat the illegal imposition of sit-at-home orders in the South East region of Nigeria, a prominent global women group called Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) has taken a stand against these unauthorized directives. Joining forces with the Enugu and Anambra State Governments, as well as other stakeholders, WOSCONET highlights the adverse economic implications and loss of revenue caused by these prolonged restrictions.

WOSCONET, renowned for its commitment to women's empowerment, has called upon other women groups such as the Catholic Women Organization (CWO), Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), Market Women Leaders, various youth and student groups and other sister bodies to join the campaign against these illegal sit-at-home orders.

Recognizing the influential role of mothers in families, the organization urges them to encourage their husbands and children to resume their daily business activities on Mondays and every other day of the week.

The leader of WOSCONET, Amb. Mrs Amaka Nweke JP, passionately voiced the need for a unified opposition against the unlawful sit-at-home orders. Speaking to reporters in Enugu on Friday, July 14, 2023, she stated, "Enough is enough. We, the women of the South East, cannot sit idly by while unauthorized individuals dictate when we should work and when we should stay at home."

The repeated threat of sit-at-home protests in the South East region raises concerns about their potential impact on the local economy and the daily lives of residents. Previous instances of such orders have led to disruptions in business activities, transportation, and overall social interaction. However, the firm stance taken Women Support Women Community Network against these orders demonstrates its unwavering commitment to the welfare and prosperity of the people.

"Additionally, the prolonged sit-at-home orders in the South East region have had a significant impact on education, particularly for children who are unable to attend school on Mondays. This disruption has resulted in academic setbacks, as these students often struggle to catch up with their counterparts from other regions who have the advantage of attending school throughout the entire week. The exemption of Mondays from the school week, effectively turning them into part of the weekend, not only affects their academic progress but also takes a toll on their mental well-being. The need to compete with students from environments where complete weekdays are dedicated to learning places them at a disadvantage, leading to increased pressure and challenges in their educational journey" she said.

Ambassador Nweke also acknowledged the efforts of the Enugu State government and other states in guaranteeing the safety of citizens against potential disruptions caused by individuals seeking to enforce the sit-at-home orders.

In response to WOSCONET's resolute statement, various stakeholders, including civil society organizations and business associations, have expressed their support for non-compliance with the sit-at-home orders. They emphasize the importance of maintaining stability and fostering economic growth in the region, urging residents to carry on with their daily activities.

In the face of economic challenges and disruptions, the collective efforts of organizations like WOSCONET and the commitment of various stakeholders signal a united front against the illegal imposition of sit-at-home orders. With the support of the women, youth, and concerned citizens, the South East region aims to reclaim its entrepreneurial spirit and restore normalcy to its economic activities.
