Enugu State Government Takes Strong Stand Against Black Market Adoption, Set to Launche Public Awareness Campaign Via Ministry of Gender Affairs

To combat the rising tide of illegal adoption and child trafficking, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, is leading the charge. A pivotal meeting convened various stakeholders, including hospitals and service providers, to address the pressing issue of black-market adoption head-on.

The gathering centered on reinforcing the significance of adhering to proper adoption protocols and raising awareness about the serious legal repercussions tied to engaging in illicit adoption practices. In a resolute address to attendees, Commissioner Enih reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to its mission of providing care and support, particularly for vulnerable children.

Drawing attention to legislative regulations that govern the adoption process, Commissioner Enih highlighted the critical importance of following established procedures. She emphasized that the Enugu State Government is fully committed to eradicating illegal adoption and will hold accountable anyone involved, in line with the Enugu State Child Rights Law 2016 and the Nigerian Child Rights Law 2003.

"The Enugu State Child Rights Law 2016, aligned with the Nigerian Child Rights Law 2003, spells out the criteria and processes for lawful adoption, safeguarding the rights and welfare of both children and women," stressed Commissioner Enih.

Recognizing the challenges faced by citizens, which encompass economic hardships, lack of awareness about legal adoption channels, and corrupt practices, Commissioner Enih unveiled plans for public awareness initiatives aimed at educating the public about legal adoption procedures in Nigeria.

Addressing the broader concerns, she proposed solutions including generating employment opportunities for young women and refining adoption laws to regulate orphanage homes, which could effectively tackle the issue at its core.

Representing partnering hospitals, Dr. Aikay Ubaka, Chief Medical Director of Cimac Clinics Uwani Enugu, expressed unwavering support for the ministry's cause. He lauded Commissioner Enih's dedication and expressed confidence in her leadership. Dr. Ubaka also praised the visionary guidance of Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah, for appointing Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih.

Esteemed directors from partnering hospitals, such as Dr. Eneh C.C of St. Bridget Hospital Emene and Dr. Ikechukwu Onoh of Tex Hospital 9th Mile Corner Ngwo, showcased their united commitment to addressing illegal adoption.

The unyielding action taken by the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, sends a potent message against black-market adoption. These endeavors aim to protect the rights and welfare of children while ensuring a legitimate adoption process. As the community rallies to combat this unethical practice, Commissioner Enih's initiative shines as a beacon of hope for a more secure and lawful future for adoption in Enugu State.
