Enugu State Gov't Pays Unscheduled Visit to Petrol Stations in Enugu Metropolis, Expresses Disappointment over Gross Irregularities and Meter Shortchange. ...Vows to Seal Filling Stations Over Discrepancies Ranging from N256.20 to N768 for every 20Ltrs Dispensed

Enugu State Government has expressed strong condemnation over reports of customers being shortchanged at local petrol stations. The government has vowed to take stringent action against marketers found to be involved in such malpractices.

The disappointment was evident as Enugu State authorities discovered that some petroleum dealers were adjusting their fuel meters incorrectly and dispensing fuel with inaccuracies. The State Government has warned that any filling station found engaging in such practices will face immediate closure.

Emphasizing their commitment to addressing citizens' concerns, the State Government has called upon the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to ensure strict compliance with accurate metering systems at filling stations.

In an unexpected visit to various petrol filling stations in the Enugu metropolis, Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Emeka Ajogu, verified claims of meter short-changing by station owners. The investigation revealed that none of the visited filling stations were using accurate metering systems, including the major distributing station.

Commissioner Ajogu expressed dismay over the dealers' insensitivity to customers who were being sold less fuel than what they paid for. He labeled this practice as "unacceptable" and highlighted that Governor Dr. Peterr Mbah's administration is committed to improving citizens' lives.

All visited filling stations were observed to have adjusted their meters and were found selling fuel between N600 and N620 per litre. Disturbingly, customers were being shortchanged varying amounts, with discrepancies ranging from N256.20 to N768.60 for every twenty litres of petrol purchased.

Commissioner Ajogu firmly instructed station managers to correct their metering systems accurately. He assured that this monitoring effort would be a regular occurrence and warned that severe penalties would be imposed on defaulting stations, including potential closures.

Customers interviewed regarding these actions commended the state government and urged for continued vigilance. They also appealed for the government to oversee the quality of fuel being sold, expressing concerns about adulterated products circulating in the market.
