BIANCA: Crisis in APC As Stakeholders Kick Against Ojukwu's Ministerial Appointment

The nomination of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a minister-designate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has faced stern opposition from prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State. These party stakeholders are calling her appointment an act of "anti-party" action that disrespects the values and unity of the APC.

Following an emergency meeting held by APC stakeholders in Awka, the state capital, the leaders expressed frustration and disappointment with the decision to appoint a candidate without prior consultation with local party members. They voiced concerns that the president’s decision undermines the morale of loyal APC members in the state.

High Chief Bunty Onuigbo, the South East Zonal Secretary of APC and an influential member of the APC Elders Forum in Anambra, addressed the press on behalf of the party stakeholders. He condemned the appointment, stating, “This is nothing but an act of anti-party, and it is detrimental. By empowering members of other political parties at the expense of the APC in Anambra State, Mr. President is not supporting party loyalty.”

Onuigbo went further, questioning the potential implications of the appointment. He asked, “Does Mr. President want a mass defection of APC members in Anambra to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)? Is he indirectly working for APGA in Anambra State?” The sentiment echoed a deeper worry that the leadership in Abuja might be enhancing the political fortunes of opposing parties, which, according to Onuigbo, is both “unheard of and highly demoralizing” for the APC in the region.

Onuigbo criticized the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for allegedly monopolizing resources from state programs and empowerment schemes, asserting that such benefits are restricted to APGA members alone while APC supporters are excluded. He emphasized, “This is a group that despises the APC and wants nothing to do with us. Mr. President is encouraging them by making such appointments.”

In response to the growing discontent, APC stakeholders announced their intention to formally present their grievances to Chief Basil Ejidike, the state APC Chairman. This appeal will be submitted to the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja, as the leaders seek urgent intervention from the party’s top hierarchy.
