Breaking: Over 40 Soldiers Killed, 20 Wounded as Boko Haram Attacks Military Base
Boko Haram militants has struck a Chadian army garrison near the Nigerian border, claiming the lives of over 40 soldiers and leaving 20 others wounded. The assault, which took place late Sunday in the volatile Lake Chad region, prompted an immediate military operation aimed at pursuing the attackers, according to Chadian government and military sources.
The presidency confirmed the attack, which occurred near Ngouboua, and noted that the assailants had seized ammunition and equipment before retreating. Among the casualties was the unit commander, whose identity remains undisclosed. Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno visited the attack site early Monday, reaffirming his commitment to secure the region and eliminate militant hideouts.
Local sources reported that Boko Haram took control of the garrison, capturing weapons, burning heavily armed vehicles, and retreating soon afterward. Military efforts to regain control of the area are ongoing, with regional governor General Saleh Haggar Tidjani affirming that forces remain on the ground in pursuit of the militants.
This assault underscores the ongoing instability within the Lake Chad region, which has become a sanctuary for armed groups, including Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). These groups have regularly targeted Chadian forces and civilians, contributing to a climate of insecurity in Chad and its neighboring countries.
Since its inception in 2009, Boko Haram has conducted numerous deadly attacks, initially in Nigeria, leading to an estimated 40,000 deaths and displacing two million people. In March 2020, Chad suffered one of its heaviest losses when around 100 soldiers were killed in an attack on the Bohoma peninsula. That incident led then-President Idriss Deby Itno to launch a major anti-jihadist operation.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno assured the population of his determination to protect the nation and has recently restructured the military’s leadership in response to growing security challenges. This decision has sparked controversy, with some military officials opposing his stance on the Sudan conflict, where Chad has been accused of supplying weapons to Sudanese paramilitary forces—a claim both Chad and the UAE have denied.
