Police Launches Investigation Popular Activist, VeryDarkMan Over Unauthorized Use of Police Uniform
The Nigerian Police have launched an investigation into popular online activist, Mr. Martins Otse, known as “Very Dark Man” (VDM), following a recently circulated video in which he appears dressed in police uniform. This action has prompted a swift response from the authorities, who have raised concerns regarding the unlawful use of official police attire.
In an official statement posted on the Police Force’s X (formerly Twitter) account, they highlighted that such unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or related equipment constitutes a criminal offense as stipulated by Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. The police underscored that such acts are subject to severe penalties, as they undermine the integrity of the force.
The statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accoutrements by an online personality, Mr. Martins Otse, popularly known as ‘VDM,’ in a video posted on his social media platforms. The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.”
The Police Force also cautioned the public and content creators against the misuse of official police items. While recognizing the creative freedom in the content creation space, the Police emphasized that any unauthorized use of uniforms and insignia not only breaches the law but also compromises the integrity and values of the Police Force.
This investigation serves as a clear reminder to citizens of the serious consequences associated with impersonating law enforcement through attire or accessories associated with the Police Force. The Police have made it clear that such actions will not be tolerated and will be pursued under the full extent of the law.
