Enugu State Govt Sets December Deadline to Revive Coal Mining Industry, Boost Economic Development

The Enugu State Government has taken significant strides toward revitalizing the coal mining industry, a sector historically pivotal to its economic identity. Over the weekend, the government convened with mineral title holders across the state, setting a firm deadline for the commencement of mining operations by December 2024.

A communique issued after the meeting between the state's Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) and the mineral title holders highlighted key resolutions aimed at addressing the industry's challenges and ensuring its revival. Among the resolutions was the commitment to engage further with stakeholders to identify sector-specific hurdles and recommend viable solutions to foster inclusive and sustainable mining activities.

The communique also underscored the importance of sensitizing host communities to MIREMCO's objectives. This measure seeks to enhance cooperation between the miners and local populations, thereby reducing operational disruptions and creating a harmonious environment for business growth.

To bolster transparency and accountability, MIREMCO resolved to request an updated directory of all mineral titles in Enugu State from the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO). This initiative aims to ensure strict adherence to regulatory standards and eliminate inactive titles that have stymied progress in the sector.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to making all mineral titles operational before the end of 2024. It emphasized that mineral title holders must commence their operations promptly. To support this, MIREMCO pledged to provide necessary assistance and address any arising challenges that could hinder their activities.

Engr. Samuel Okoro, Chairman of MIREMCO and Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals, expressed gratitude to the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, for their unwavering support. He pledged to uphold all relevant standards and ensure the full realization of the sector's potential under their guidance.

He further encouraged mineral title holders to rise to the occasion and maximize the opportunities presented, assuring them of MIREMCO's readiness to collaborate closely for optimal results.

This initiative marks a critical turning point in the effort to restore Enugu's status as the coal mining hub of the former Eastern Region and is poised to stimulate significant economic growth in the state.
