NAFDAC Shuts Down 250 Illegal Factories Producing Fake Drinks In Popular Cemetery Market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully shut down 250 illegal factories producing counterfeit food and beverages in the Cemetery Market, Aba, Abia State. This operation, named Operation Clean Up Aba, is one of the most aggressive actions taken against the notorious market.

NAFDAC's Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that counterfeit goods worth over ₦5 billion were confiscated during the raid. The fake products included well-known brands such as Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt. These products were found to be made under unsanitary conditions using contaminated water, harmful chemicals, and recycled bottles.

In addition to seizing counterfeit products, NAFDAC officials destroyed over 1,500 cartons of fake beverages on-site. They also uncovered three warehouses storing expired Hollandia Yoghurt, which was intended to be revalidated and resold. The agency stressed that criminals in the market were using cheap substitutes like saccharin, unsafe chemicals, and starches in alcoholic beverages.

Professor Adeyeye commended the cooperation of the Abia State Government, especially Governor Alex Otti, and local authorities for their support in the success of the operation. NAFDAC has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products to their offices.

The Cemetery Market has long been known for producing counterfeit food and drinks, and this raid marks a significant step in NAFDAC's ongoing efforts to eliminate fake products and safeguard public health in Nigeria.
