BREAKING! SDP Appoints Senator Ugochukwu Uba Deputy National Chairman (South) — as Party moves to strengthen southern leadership ahead of 2027 elections

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially appointed Distinguished Senator Ugochukwu Uba as the new Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting of the NWC chaired by the party's National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.

The appointment comes in line with the SDP constitution and the mandate of the National Convention authorizing the NWC to fill existing leadership vacancies ahead of the 2027 general elections. The position of Deputy National Chairman (South) has been vacant for over five years, previously occupied by party leaders from the South West region.

Senator Uba, an accomplished academic and seasoned politician from Anambra State in the South East zone, brings decades of experience in public service and governance to the role. His previous positions include:

  • Senator of the Federal Republic
  • Director General and Honourable Commissioner in Anambra State
  • Senior Lecturer at the University of Abuja

He holds a first-class bachelor's degree and a PhD in Political Science, underscoring his deep understanding of governance, policy, and democratic development.

Senator Uba’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by the SDP to reposition its leadership structure in southern Nigeria and prepare a formidable front ahead of the 2027 elections.

Notably, Senator Uba also played a key role in the party's 2023 general election campaign as a member of the National Campaign Council (NCC), where he served as Director of the Admin & Finance Directorate. In that capacity, he worked closely with the party leadership, candidates, and state executive councils to coordinate electoral strategies and promote the party’s vision of accountable and people-centered governance.

Political analysts say Uba’s elevation signals the SDP’s renewed commitment to inclusivity, regional balance, and strategic leadership as it sets its sights on electoral victories in the coming years.

Further announcements on the reorganization of the party’s leadership team are expected in the weeks ahead.
