Gov Peter Mbah Market Monitoring Team Led By Hon Dr Chinedu Mbah, Enugu State Revenue Service Apprehend Illegal Tax Collectors at Orie Nara In Nkanu East LGA
In a decisive move to curb extortion and illegal revenue collection in local markets, the Enugu State Market Monitoring Team and The Staff of Enugu State Revenue Services have apprehended several individuals allegedly involved in the collection of unauthorized levies from traders at Orie Nara Market in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
The operation, which took place this morning, Tuesday, 6th of May 2025, was carried out by a Special Taskforce Team under the Enugu State Market Liaison Office, led by Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mbah, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Market Liaison and the Enugu State Revenue Service. The raid involved both government agents and members of the Market Taskforce Team, who acted swiftly following credible intelligence on the illegal activities.
Addressing the traders during the enforcement exercise, Hon. Dr. Mbah condemned the unauthorized levy collection, describing it as a direct sabotage of the state government's revenue system and a grave injustice to hardworking traders. He reiterated that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is committed to ensuring that all forms of extortion are eradicated from Enugu’s markets.
While educating the market community on the government’s approved revenue structure, Dr. Mbah explained that petty traders are only required to pay N200 directly to the government, while shop owners are to pay an annual levy of N36,000. He warned that anyone caught imposing unapproved levies or exploiting market women and traders would be dealt with decisively.
“The Enugu State Government will never tolerate illegal revenue collectors. Our traders must be protected from exploitation. Every payment must follow due process and go directly to the government,” he stated.
The Chairman of Enugu State Revenue Service, Chief Emeka Nnamani, stated that the culprits would be prosecuted, He further encouraged the traders to report any suspicious activities or individuals parading themselves as revenue agents without proper identification or authorization.
The apprehended suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution.
