FGM: Enugu First Lady, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iheoma Mbah, Leads Zero-Tolerance Campaign to Safeguard Girls in Enugu East

In a decisive show of leadership and compassion, the Wife of the Governor of Enugu State, Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iheoma Mbah, has launched a far-reaching sensitisation campaign on Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across the Enugu East Senatorial Zone, reaffirming the state’s unwavering commitment to the protection and dignity of women and girls.

The sensitisation programme, held on Thursday, February 6, 2026, at the Nkanu East Local Government Secretariat, Amagwunze, drew an impressive turnout of stakeholders, including women leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, students, and large numbers of girls. The gathering marked a significant milestone in the sustained grassroots effort to eliminate harmful traditional practices. Also present were the wives of chairmen from the six local government areas in the Enugu East Senatorial District: Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Enugu North, Enugu South, Enugu East and Isi-Uzo.

The programme was hosted by the Wife of the Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Council, Hon. Mrs. Rita Edeh, who, in a warm and heartfelt welcome address, expressed profound gratitude to the Enugu State First Lady for selecting Nkanu East as the host community for the critical advocacy. She described the event as a defining moment beyond ceremony, stressing that it symbolised a united resolve by women across the senatorial zone to safeguard the lives, health and future of their daughters and generations yet unborn.

Hon. Mrs. Edeh firmly stated that Female Genital Mutilation has no place in a society that upholds human dignity, health and development. She urged women to embrace their roles as first defenders within their homes and communities, noting that persistent enlightenment, open dialogue and moral courage are indispensable tools in confronting and dismantling practices that endanger the well-being of women and girls.

Speaking on behalf of the First Lady, the Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Special Duties, Barr. Chidinma Egeonu, delivered a compelling keynote address that set a strong tone for the campaign. She conveyed the goodwill and resolute stance of Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iheoma Mbah, emphasising that the fight against Female Genital Mutilation remains a core priority within the First Lady’s social intervention agenda.

Barr. Egeonu highlighted the First Lady’s consistent advocacy for the protection of women and children, noting that through the Custos Care Foundation, numerous initiatives have been implemented to promote safety, welfare and empowerment across Enugu State. She explained that the zero-tolerance campaign is rooted in the conviction that every woman and girl deserves to live free from violence, fear and discrimination, and that cultural practices must evolve in harmony with universal human values.

She further called on traditional institutions, community leaders, families and women’s groups to take collective ownership of the campaign, stressing that while government leadership is crucial, sustainable change can only be achieved through community-driven vigilance, education and advocacy.

Other speakers, including Mrs. Nneji Margaret Ifenyinwa and Mrs. Osinachi, echoed the zero-tolerance message, advocating for continuous grassroots sensitisation. They underscored the importance of educating mothers, caregivers and young people, describing awareness as a powerful weapon in breaking long-standing myths and misconceptions surrounding Female Genital Mutilation.

The programme was further brought to life through impactful drama presentations with strong anti-FGM themes, colourful cultural dance displays, and an energetic match-past by women and girls from the six local government areas in the Enugu East Senatorial Zone. These activities served as both entertainment and powerful storytelling platforms, reinforcing the shared message of dignity, protection and collective responsibility.

The event concluded on a note of compassion and solidarity, as participants received bags of rice and other food items, distributed on behalf of the Enugu State First Lady. The gesture was warmly received and further reflected Mrs. Mbah’s people-centred approach to advocacy and social welfare.

Overall, the sensitisation programme stood as a resounding declaration of unity and determination by women across the Enugu East Senatorial Zone, reinforcing Enugu State’s zero-tolerance stance on Female Genital Mutilation and its enduring commitment to protecting the rights, health and future of women and girls.
