The senatorial aspirant for Enugu East Senatorial District, Prof. Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, under Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is reportedly maintaining a commanding lead in the ongoing party primary election, with early results and reports from across the six local government areas of the district indicating overwhelming support for the renowned scholar, international jurist, and grassroots politician.

Although the official result of the primary election is yet to be formally announced by the party's electoral committee, emerging reports from various wards suggest that Prof. Nnaji has established a significant advantage over other contenders as collation continues.

In his political base, Amurri Ward in Nkanu West Local Government Area, the respected Professor of International Law and Global Politics reportedly swept major available votes, demonstrating what political observers described as a strong vote of confidence from his immediate constituency.

"The Senate requires individuals who understand the struggles of ordinary people and possess the capacity to influence policies that improve lives. I stand tall as an aspirant with a compassionate heart, intellectual capacity, and a proven commitment to community advancement," he stated.

Supporters have pointed to his impressive credentials as evidence of his preparedness for the Senate. A native of the ancient Amurri Kingdom in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Prof. Nnaji is widely respected for his contributions to academia, law, public policy, and international governance.

The distinguished scholar previously contested for the governorship of Enugu State in 2023 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before stepping down in support of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a move that was widely interpreted as a demonstration of loyalty, statesmanship, and commitment to unity within the party.

Prof. Nnaji also contested for the Enugu East Senatorial seat in 2019 and has built an impressive international profile through numerous academic and professional publications on International Law, Global Politics, European integration, migration studies, and post-war political transformations.

His scholarly works include studies on the impact of European Union enlargement, migration and labour dynamics in Europe, as well as notable publications such as A Variegated Insight on Stalinism and De-Stalinization of the Eastern Bloc and Western Europe: A Case Study of the Post-World War II Era.

The legal scholar currently serves as a Professor of Law at the University of Kansas Law School, USA. He is also a Merit Award recipient of the University of Naples, Italy, and has served as a Judge at the International Criminal Court MCC in The Hague, Netherlands.

In addition, he was a Vice-Chancellor candidate for Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in 2015 and later for Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2024, further cementing his reputation as a respected academic leader and public intellectual.
